The Scene…
Watching live music at the Fidelio Café is no joke; For, there are no riddles to solve. You step off the sidewalk, on main street, into a place that breathes warmth and familiarity, even if you have never been inside before. I believe it was designed that way. Really; the perfect venue for Mallory Chipman to play her show in New Brunswick.
The Warm Open:
The evening started off with the George Maquire the solo acoustic singer, song writer, and once resident in the area, now resides in Fredericton, but is no stranger to the crowd as he has friends in the audience. He plays a 30-minute set that has some covers but it’s when he plays his originals that he truly shines. Mostly because they are about people and experiences that have helped shape his life. And you can hear the inflections in his voice when he sings their names. After dedicating a song to the evenings headliner (Mallory) he closes with a bit of fun as he breaks out his ukulele and ends his set with strums and smiles.
On with the Show:
From the moment the Prairie Songbird, Mallory Chipman, starts her show, she sets the mood with a story, it’s funny how great artists are also great story tellers, for the two seem to go hand in hand. She gives us the background first and then stuns us with her performance. From the opening cords to “The Dive” to the sing-a-long closer “Big Sky Country” She demonstrates her craft as a total performer blending humor, emotion, raw ability, and polished skill (again, her first album came out ten+ years ago).. Clearly, she was enamored with her audience, just as much as we were her. To close the show she told the crowd, “We only have two more songs”. But She said that twice after she performed one. And then played one more, still.
…. But! Mallory wasn’t alone.
Accompanying, Mallory on tour is multi-instrumentalist Brett Hansen, who is also her husband. Brett is the perfect compliment to their live performance as he accents every song with the right tone, and textures on his guitar. Almost, as if he was painting a mural in the back ground. To see him visually play is almost like watching a dandelion move in the wind without a care in the world., until all the seeds have flown. And on-stage Mallory is his wind. And he is hers, they breathe life into one another, smiling every time their eyes meet.
In Closing: It was a privilege to see Mallory Chipman in that intimate a setting @ the Fidelio Café You can stream her music on all platforms. Follow the Café and the Scene for all your musical happening s on Facebook.
