Mallory Chipman: So far, so good…so much more to come!
On Friday June 5th 2026, Mallory Chipman will be playing the Fidelio Café (Downtown Woodstock), with George Maguire (opening). The show runs from 6:00pm to 830pm. Why is it important, for you to be there in attendance? I’m sure everyone is familiar with that old rallying cry, “If we don’t support shows like this, then how can we expect to get bigger names to come to town? This doesn’t apply to Mallory, because she is the bigger name.
I must admit, that I am a bit nervous as I wait for her to call me to do an interview. At the 2026 Canadian Folk Music awards, Chipman was nominated for solo artist of the year. So, there’s that in the back of mind. Also, my head is filled 5 albums worth of music that she has released in the past ten years. It’s an eclectic array of songs raging from Folk, Country, Pop, Roots, and Jazz and all of them have been given the breath of life by her voice, which is an instrument unto itself.
Interview:
It takes me about 15 minutes into our conversation, to realize, that I haven’t even asked her a question yet, we talk about flooded basements, music, and I now know she loves professional wrestling. And I was reminded that there was a lyric in the song called “Tarps” from “Pro Wrestling the Band “that reads, “If there was a better place than here, don’t you think I would be there?” And I asked her,” if that pretty much sums up her relationship with the city of Edmonton?” “Oh Yes!” she exclaims.,” There is no city like Edmonton, we call it the dirt city, it has grit, it’s big enough…so there is lots to do and small enough so you won’t get lost. The music and arts scene are incredible; Look I love touring and I love every city I have been to, but Edmonton is home!” I would add inspirational as well as it serves as the soundscape for a lot of her music.
We discuss the fact that her music is hard to categorize and I bring up the fact that she has been nominated and won a few awards in the county music category… so I ask her this question,” I truly believe that you are a great country artist , but mostly in respect to the way you represent Canada in your song writing and music , how important is that to you as your legacy grows? Her response is one of hope, “Thank you”, she says,” look I am a hard-core Albertan, most of the people that live in the province are, but it’s an interesting time for us now. There’s a few that want to separate, as much as I love Alberta…Alberta is in Canada and I want it to stay a part of Canada. My life and music and experience is woven into the fabric of this Country”.
The subject then switches back to geeking out over music and artists and bands we both like and some of Mallory’s favorite ones are ones you cannot classify musically which is reflective in her own music. One of her music heroes is David Bowie, actually her very first tattoo is Bowie’s Album Cover Blackstar and she has a song written about him called Starstruck from her first album “Nocturnalize” “I love all music, I love the process, creating it, producing it, teaching it”, she says. Having taught music for seven years she is truly an educator. But acknowledges that as accomplished as she is music is al about the journey and the experiences you learn from it and doesn’t want to stop learning, “because music teaches you something everyday”.
Fun Fact: On Friday June 5th when Mallory plays downtown Woodstock, she will be releasing two new singles “Lawless” & “Adkisson”. So, buy a ticket go to the show and be the first ones to her play them live. Now that’s a “Rallying Cry”!
